18th-birthdayAll work and no play would make VOX a dull club. Luckily, playing is a high priority for us and much of the vibrancy of VOX lies in its active social life. Not that we need an excuse to party, but VOX was 18 years old this Saturday, October 5th 2013. So we walked down memory lane to Harbour Playhouse at 30 Avenue Road and partied like it was 1995.

Literally.

We got back into grunge (red-checked shirts and ripped jeans), embraced glitter and glam (faux fur and golden dresses), cavorted in “Clueless” inspired chic (shorts over tights topped by berets and bangles) and bopped to “Rhythm is a dancer”. Not everyone got into the spirit of things with most blokes looking suspiciously like they do every other night of the week, but the vibe was clearly nineties.

The ones who best epitomised the times were Maria Mac Mullan, Rosie Cleary and the guy in the army jacket. Maria and Rosie were unmistakable as Britney and Bjork, and Mr. Army Surplus Supplies was the reincarnation of the permanently penniless and permanently drunk 1990’s Irish student.

The centre itself drew compliments from everyone. More Greenwich than Grand Canal,  it consists of three large open spaces, with painted brick walls and wooden floors. Perfect for parties but also for other events such as workshops, drama groups etc. Tickets for the night were ten euro but this included plenty of food and booze, endless streaming of nineties’ music and movies and games organised by co-manager John Lawler.

First game was Charades. Two teams of four were formed . Colette Bishop, Dan O’Neill, Fiona O’Meara and James Andrews were Confused, whilst Stephen Mulvaney, Jill Forde, and Aidan McCormack were Excited.

Gorgeous in grunge, Colette Bishop took the floor. Her team Confused belied their name and guessed her clue in a mind-blowing 50 seconds. Deux points ! Next was opposing Stephen Mulvaney, an advanced CC8 and yet and yet…. He could not communicate when it mattered most. Nil points to Excited. And 2 jello shots to be downed.

Back to Confused. Dan O’Neill did a great job but his team were too thick to get it. Luckily, so was everyone else, meaning Confused reigned supreme. Fiona O’Meara did a Voscar winning performance of “Wonderwall”, guessed in only 20 seconds! Quatre points!!!!!!

Back to Excited who YET AGAIN failed to guess their clue, but the, by now,  inappropriately named Confused succeeded: “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe”. 6 points to 4. It was turning out to be a great party. Fates were sealed when Fiona’s “Ghost” was guessed and Dan’s “Beaches” was not. To the victors the spoils, and Confused members wore their medals with pathetic pride.

Night ended with lots of great dancing…Snap!, Daft Punk, and Nirvana upstairs for the cool kids.

So where were you last Saturday night if not with us?
